Nothing is more disappointing than anticipating a sweet, delicious slice of summery fresh cut watermelon, only to find you have purchased a dud. Here’s 3 tips to help you pick a sweet, ripe watermelon every time… along with a delicious recipe.

Tips For Picking WatermelonThere are so many tips and ‘wives tales’ out there that I used to go to the market with 23 melon picking criteria, only to get confused and overwhelmed. Use these 3 simple yet effective tips to help you purchase a ripe, delicious watermelon everytime.

1. Look for a round yellowish spot on the outside rind. That means that the watermelon has been given the time to ripen in the field. This spot is called the field spot. If the field spot is white or still green it means your melon was not given the proper time to ripen.

2. Look for a dull, dark green color on the rind of the watermelon. A nice shiny melon may entice you into buying it, but a shiny melon means that it has not been given time to ripen in the field and will not be ready to eat.

3. Your watermelon should feel heavier than it looks. Heaviness in a watermelon is a good thing because the water content of a watermelon increases along with ripening, and a fully ripened watermelon will be over 90% water and that means it’s heavier.

Grilled Watermelon & Feta Salad




  • 4 watermelon wedges, 1⁄2-inch thick
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup feta cheese crumbles
  • 4-6 fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon quality aged balsamic vinegar, thick variety


1. Drizzle olive oil on watermelon wedges and salt to taste.watermelon salad2 (1)


2. Place wedges on the Grill Basket. Preheat your Ronco Ready Grill and grill watermelon for 7-10 minutes. The rind should be just a bit charred.

3. Plate grilled watermelon and top with feta cheese crumbles and chopped basil. Then drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Serve warm.
